Ksubi and Kirin proudly and successfully are injecting Australia with some much needed culture, and better yet, the Japanese kind.
Staying with Ksubi’s underlying “anti establishment” theme, the blonde bob ballerinas, with pantyhose for faces, from KATHY took a very Alice in Wonderland approach to their demonstration, which after I read the flyer was to display the “control” of our own world. A very obscure and intriguing piece with the performance unfolding inside a giant white mosquito net enclosing a collection of live white doves.
The crowd then fluttered to the next, highly technological piece. A “stimulating” experience, this duo created tunes with a raise of an eyebrow, wink, or full face grimace. I watched in fear as the young boys connected several electrical wires to pressure points on their faces, where a slight malfunction could have hairs standing on end!
“Finally something interesting in Sydney” a friend declares, as we dance along with the best performance of the evening; Tripple Nipples. These girls courageously took to the stage in not much more then black electrical tape, strategically placed “furry bits” and some body paint!! The combination of their out-of-this-world look and great beats, hypnotized the crowd and we soon danced in a trance till the last giant -feather filled – balloon had popped.
Strolling through the party seemed to take me through a time warp to 1985, sharp shoulders, amazing volume and even a few crimped hair-dos and the ever so popular “Cindi Lauper” inspired head shave on a few females. Much of the party fashion was made up of borrowing bits and pieces from other subcultures within our ever growing society, and “successfully” clashing them into smashing ensembles. I saw inspiration drawn from Gothics, with to the floor – flowing dresses with big chunky platform boots, the Punk era represented with mesh and studs, even a lil rockabilly with the appearance of creepers, and the ever popular scarlet red lipstick. The boys still rockin the straight preppy button up shirt, some with a western influence.
Kudos to Ksubi for finally giving a pulse back to a flat-line party scene that has been plaguing Sydney.
My own images never would have done the justice that Deckland has here; please check out the rest at hobogestapo.com
